Review & Description

This album marks two 'firsts' for Hélène Grimaud - her first live DG recording and her first ever Mozart concerto recording. The album is the culmination of a musical love affair which began two years ago when the French pianist played Bach with the Kammerorchester des Symphonieorchesters des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Chamber Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio). From the beginning there was a very special chemistry and musical understanding. In May this year Hélène Grimaud returned to Munich to play Mozart with the orchestra led by her from the piano, in collaboration with the concert master Radoslaw Szulc. The pianist was so excited by the concerts that she was inspired to release this live recording. As well as the two concertos, the album includes the beautiful concert aria for orchestra, soprano and piano 'Ch'io mi scordi di te', sung by Mojca Erdmann. Hélène has loved this aria since she first heard it as a child and for her it represents what is most characteristic in Mozart's music: grace and tenderness. The aria was Mozart's declaration of love to the soprano Nancy Storace, his Susanna in the world premiere of "Le nozze di Figaro". It was composed in 1786, the same year as the Piano Concerto No.23 which it joins here

Bio: Mark O'Connor is an astonishingly versatile American violinist and composer who has had exceptional success in country and bluegrass music, jazz, classical, and crossover projects. He began to win country fiddling competitions when he was a teenager and already intended to pursue a career in this music. He closely studied the playing of such popular violinists as the European jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli and the Texas fiddler Benny Thomasson. By the time he was 21, he had already played as a sideman with Grappelli, including a performance at Carnegie Hall. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1983, determined to make a living as a musician. But the fiddle, once the predominant instrumental sound of country music, had faded to a mainly supporting role to the plucked strings and drums of modern country. Although he did play mandolin, he took two years to be widely noticed. This came about because the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band engaged him to play on a single, "High Horse," that became a hit. O'Connor immediately became in demand as a session artist. During the rest of the decade he participated in over 450 albums, working with leading artists such as Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Clint Black, Jimmy Buffett, and Randy Travis. He was a member of groups called Strength in Numbers, The Dixie Dregs, and The Dregs, and began to make his own albums.

Anonymous 4 revisit their favorite era in repertoire that illuminates medieval women s affinity for the most complex polyphony of their time. Spanning the entire 13th century from virtuosic motets and conductus to heartfelt laments and sacred songs the remarkable Las Huelgas manuscript was compiled for a convent of aristocratic Castilian women who (in spite of a rule forbidding Cistercian nuns from singing polyphony) sang the most beautiful, advanced and demanding music from all across Gothic-era Europe.

Review & Description

JOSEPH CALLEJA - THE MALTESE TENOR It was summer 2010, and Joseph Calleja was making his role debut as Gabriele Adorno in Verdi's Simon Boccanegra. The house was Covent Garden in London, and his co-stars included a certain Plácido Domingo, now singing the baritone title-role. Joseph Calleja had planned to study the challenging role of Adorno during the previous summer, but had lost that time preparing for another new role, Offenbach's Hoffmann, which he had taken on at the Metropolitan Opera in New York after another tenor withdrew. "So, contrary to all my principles, I studied Adorno for just two weeks before I came to London", Joseph Calleja explains, laughing. "I had no other time. But the voice was telling me it was ready for new things. And the minute I started on the piece, it just fitted into the voice as if I had been singing it for ten years. It was really one of those instances when it all just works." The critics enthusiastically agreed: plaudits for Joseph Calleja not only matched those for Plácido Domingo himself, but in some cases even came close to exceeding them. It's a story that doesn't just attest Joseph Calleja's increasing prominence on the world operatic stage, but also his development as a dramatic artist. It's now five years since the Maltese singer recorded his last recital album, The Golden Voice (a follow-up to 2004's Tenor Arias) - a long time to be away from the studio. "Back then I was an extremely young artist to be recording CDs at all", he replies. "Of course I enjoyed the success, but I also had a long way to go. What's changed is that I'm much more in control of my vocal facility and I have a maturity which only time on stage can bring to one's art. If you know the role inside out, then you can find the right nuances and inflection much more easily." So one way into The Maltese Tenor is through the roles that Joseph Calleja now knows from the immediacy of live performance. There is, of course, Adorno's aria "Sento avvampar nell'anima", a late addition to the album, but one that Joseph Calleja felt was indispensable after his London triumph. It is still rarely performed outside of complete performances of the opera. "But any self-respecting tenor with a good voice should make it a show-stopper, because it's so beautifully written." Hoffmann is here too, as part of a quartet of French heroes that also includes Massenet's des Grieux (from Manon), Gounod's Faust and, in a languorous duet with another Decca artist, the Polish soprano Aleksandra Kurzak, the lovesick fisherman Nadir in Bizet's Les Pêcheurs de perles. "The next four to five years are ideal for me to explore these full lyric French roles", Joseph Calleja explains. "There are so many opinions about what the `French style' really is. The consensus is that the French line gives you less room to manoeuvre, to do your own thing as a singer. But the way I see it is through the Italian bel canto style. It's what I try to do with Hoffmann, particularly in the middle of his chanson, which is more lyrical." In the celebrated "Salut, demeure chaste et pure!" from Faust, meanwhile - a role Joseph Calleja has sung in Berlin and would love to reprise - the challenge is to give fresh spontaneity to one of opera's hit numbers. "This aria is sung so much in concert that one tends to forget about what's in the text, what the aria means in context." The Pearl Fishers duet, too, followed live concert performances in Frankfurt. "At the end of the evening there was a thirty-minute standing ovation . . . so I thought I had to include that duet on the album." A stronger dramatic take on these arias hasn't diluted Joseph Calleja's fidelity to that bel canto style. It's one reason why his voice has often been described as "old-fashioned": grace and elegance matched to a timbre that's lighter than that of many other tenors of Joseph Calleja's generation and flecked by a rapid, persistent vibrato. Early on in Joseph Calleja's career, some found that intrusive. "For a period of time, my vibrato was very, very fast", Joseph Calleja concedes. "But people fail to mention or think about how old I was at the time. If you listen to very early recordings of Jussi Björling, Enrico Caruso or Giuseppe di Stefano, they all have it. Eventually it settles down and matures." Joseph Calleja grew up soaked in the golden voices of the twentieth century and won't be lectured on what they did or didn't do to keep their voices in peak condition: listening to their recordings was a cornerstone of his studies in Malta with his childhood mentor, the tenor-turned-teacher Paul Asciak. "He sang concerts with Tito Schipa, he was friends with Franco Corelli . . . what he gave me is really the way they used to do things back then, based on listening to the old recordings. Some people say that when they're preparing a new role they don't listen to anybody else. I can understand that, but I don't accept it! If you don't listen to what your predecessors did before you, it's like being a leaf on a tree and not knowing which tree you're on." The old masters will be Joseph Calleja's guide as he tackles the bigger, meatier Italian repertoire, too. It's a new direction in The Maltese Tenor: not just Puccini's La bohème, but Tosca and Manon Lescaut, too; Verdi, aside from Boccanegra, is represented by the more spinto (literally: pushed) operas Un ballo in maschera and Luisa Miller. Some would call Boito's version of the Faust story, Mefistofele, from which Joseph Calleja sings the winsome "Dai campi, dai prati" and "Giunto sul passo estremo", another step up altogether on the ladder to the big dramatic repertoire. "The voice should tell the singer by itself when it's time to move on from La bohème or Lucia di Lammermoor to this repertoire", Joseph Calleja observes. "Mefistofele and Un ballo in maschera in particular are both beautifully written, they're all on the breath and the approach is still bel canto. Just because it's Verdi doesn't mean you have to shout your way through it." You could call this the wisdom of the more mature Maltese tenor. Or, if you're Joseph Calleja, you might simply call it gut instinct. "I'm sorry I haven't anything more intellectual to offer you", he laughs, by way of apology. "But I just want to sing as beautifully as possible - without losing my commitment to the work." Neil Fisher

Review & Description

There were occasions during the three decades when the LP record ruled supreme - from the 1950s to the 1970s - when the chemistry between an orchestra, its conductor and their record company combined to work a magic that the commitment of long-term recording contracts quite often made possible. Karajan and the Philharmonia; Ansermet and the Suisse Romande; Dorati and the Minneapolis; Münch and the Boston Symphony, Cluytens and the Paris Conservatoire and Previn and the London Symphony are all prime examples of such collaborations. All of these produced recorded performances that are as fine today as they ever were and are all well-represented in the current CD catalogues. Until now there has been one successful recording collaboration that seems almost to have slipped under the radar: the Pittsburgh Symphony, William Steinberg and the Capitol Records producer, Richard C. Jones.

This set of 20 CDs presents virtually everything that was recorded by Steinberg during the seven years that he recorded for Capitol: from the Schubert Second Symphony, recorded on 9 February 1952, to the Italian Serenade by Wolf, from 16 April 1959. There are some exceedingly good performances in this set and the recordings show that Capitol Records were at the technical forefront when it came to sound quality and production values.

The earlier recordings were, of course, made in mono and come up surprisingly well on CD. From 1956 onwards the recordings were made in stereo. There are a selection of recordings, both mono and stereo, that are here being released on CD for the first time.

Also included are the recordings of Strauss that Steinberg and Jones made with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, in June 1957.

Getting to know these wonderful 1950s recordings from a conductor who, perhaps, didn't always get the critical acclaim that was his due, will be an exciting and rewarding experience for any prospective purchaser

Review & Description

Although the pieces performed here by the internationally acclaimed, Canadian-based soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian
are sung entirely in Armenian, these songs cast a powerful spell long before their literal meaning has been gleaned.
Bayrakdarian born in Lebanon, the daughter of Armenian parents explores the extraordinary legacy of Gomidas
Vardabet, a well-traveled, turn-of-the-nineteenth-century composer who made it his life' s work to seek out, transcribe
and re-interpret the ancient liturgy, songs, lullabies, hymns and folk dances of his homeland. His work would have
been remarkable under any circumstances, but it has become all the more significant in light of the Armenian genocide
of 1915, which left him emotionally devastated and put an end to his life as a composer.
Bayrakdarian performed Gomidas' s music as part of the score to Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan s 2002 Ararat,
a multi-layered drama about contemporary filmmakers attempting to dramatize and come to terms with the events
of 1915. However, mainstream moviegoers will more readily recognize her voice from The Lord of the Rings: The
Two Towers. Composer Howard Shore invited Bayrakdarian to sing on the Grammy Award-winning soundtrack after
hearing one of her recordings. She s even more renowned among opera fans the world over, especially for her performances,
on stage and on record, as Cleopatra in Handel s Giulio Cesare and in such Mozart works as Don Giovanni
and The Magic Flute. Her voice, says Time, combines lyricism with remarkable dramatic instincts. Bayrakdarian
made her Metropolitan Opera debut in William Bolcom s A View from the Bridge.
Sings Gomidas contains love songs, devotional songs, evocations of nature, children s songs, and lamentations, and
comic songs. It was recorded at the Aram Khachaturian Philharmonic Hall in Yerevan, Armenia with the Chamber
Players of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. All the songs were arranged and orchestrated by scholar and pianist
Serouj Kradjian, her concert partner and husband. Egoyan contributes eloquent liner notes to the album package,
illustrating the importance of Bayrakdarian s undertaking to music lovers everywhere: The strength of any culture
resides in its ability to preserve, cherish, reinvent and grow.
