Review & Description

From December on, "Arthur Rubinstein The Complete Album Collection" will be the world's biggest CD edition for a solo artist according to Guinness World Records (TM). It features all the legendary pianist's issued recordings made by RCA Victor between 1940 and 1976, and includes one LP issued on the DECCA label in 1978. The collection also includes the recordings Rubinstein made in England for the English label His Master's Voice (HMV) between 1928 and 1940, most of which were released in the United States by RCA on its Victor label. The collection includes complete studio and live performances, solo, concerto and chamber music repertoire in reproductions of original LP sleeves and labels, the earlier recordings, initially released on 78-rpm discs, appear in three sets with 14 CDs in the edition. The bonus CDs in this edition (CDs 140-142) contain recordings of his legendary 1961 cycle of ten concerts at New York's Carnegie Hall. They include four works that Rubinstein had never before committed to disc plus two others that represent brand-new additions to his RCA discography. This edition also boasts the finest sound quality ever bestowed on Arthur Rubinstein's complete recordings. The masters for the principal works in the collection come from the series of Living Stereo SACDs and Japanese XRCDs. All the other recordings are based on masters from the Rubinstein Collection of 1999, technically and sonically refurbished for this edition. In cases where the desired results could not be obtained, Sony Classical has gone back to the original analogue tapes. The 164-page full-colored hardcover book in landscape format includes new liner notes by Rubinstein biographer Harvey Sachs, photos shot or selected by Arthur Rubinstein's daughter Eva Rubinstein, an essay about the legendary 1961 Carnegie Hall concerts, complete discography in alphabetical and chronological order featuring 78s, 45s and LPs and track listings with complete discographical notes, producer names and matrix nos. The two bonus DVDs are "Rubinstein Remembered", a documentary tracing the great pianist's life from his origins in AódA{^o}, Poland, through his final concert there in 1975, with interviews from family and friends, newsreels, home movies, TV interviews and performance footage. Narrated by Rubinstein's son John Rubinstein and produced by Peter Rosen and the "The Benefit Recital for Israel 1976" recorded at Ambassador College, Pasadena, California on Jan 15, 1975 featuring works by Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin and Mendelssohn. The "Arthur Rubinstein Complete Album Collection" consists almost entirely of reproductions of vinyl LPs in their original sleeves. The few exceptions that were only released on CD retain their original CD cover. Thus for the first time ever, music lovers have the opportunity of discovering every single one of Rubinstein's original albums in a single issue.

The Collector s Edition
Celebrating a groundbreaking label
51CD BOX SET the true legacy of a legendary label

Long hailed as an audiophile s label, Mercury represents an important milestone in the history of classical recordings

As The New York Times described, "One feels oneself in the living presence of the orchestra"

60 years after the landmark first recording, Mercury Living Presence: The Collector s Edition celebrates this special anniversary

Elegantly packaged, and following the highly successful format of The Decca Sound, this box set presents 50 original albums that have won accolades, and features such celebrated artists as Antal Dorati, Rafael Kubelik, Gina Bachauer, Byron Janis, Janos Starker, and Henryk Szeryng

The bonus disc contains a rare interview with Mercury legendary producer Wilma Cozart Fine

Mercury Living Presence is special in many ways - an American company, from the heyday of classical recording in the U.S., that reproduced some of the most sonically realistic recordings at the dawn of the stereo era. Precious few stereo LPs were pressed when these recordings were issued, and they became some of the rarest, most collectible classical discs ever. Mercury Living Presence continues to enjoy a special reputation as one of the most enterprising, prestigious and sonically-spectacular labels in the history of classical recording.

Some of these recording have been available on CD and on SACD. However, many are now deleted and only available 2nd-hand or through auction sellers at pemium prices. This 50-album Box Set (plus bonus interview CD with Wilma Cozart Fine, Mercury s producer) affords collectors an opportunity to acquire 50 classic recordings at a terrific price, in a box which may well become collectible itself.

Review & Description

The critically acclaimed, Arizona-based Phoenix Chorale (formerly Phoenix Bach Choir) originally focused on music of the Renaissance and baroque periods, but today is equally dedicated to the creation and performance of new music. On this disc the Choir performs choral works, and settings of sacred texts by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo.

When he first heard Gjeilo's Ubi caritas, Charles Bruffy was instantly hooked, finding the music refreshing and magnetic . Bruffy brought Gjeilo's music to the Chorale and its audiences, and the response was immediate. Soon after, Gjeilo was invited to be the Chorale's first Composer-in-Residence.

Phoenix, a setting of the Agnus Dei, is dedicated to Charles Bruffy and the Phoenix Chorale in honour of its fiftieth anniversary. When Gjeilo first visited the choir in Arizona, he had never been to the desert before, and the 'quiet beauty and barrenness of the landscape' moved him deeply. He describes Phoenix as 'symphonic in nature... one of those pieces where the text is very much the servant of the music, not the other way around'.

In contrast, Northern Lights takes its inspiration from Gjeilo's homeland, Norway, and the 'terrible beauty' of the natural phenomenon that may be observed there. The music reflects the powerful and electric quality of the northern lights, which must have seemed both mesmerising and terrifying to people in the past when no one knew what they were, and superstition prevailed.

The Phoenix Chorale made its first appearance on Chandos in 2004 with Shakespeare in Song. Since then it has released several joint recordings with its sister choir, the Kansas Chorale, featuring among others Alexander Grechaninov's Passion Week, the disc nominated for a Grammy in no fewer than four categories, including Best Classical Album and Best Choral Performance, winning in the Best Engineered and Classical album categories.

Review & Description

Accordion virtuoso Richard Galliano has proved himself to be exceptionally versatile, having made his mark in all kinds of musical contexts; from establishing the accordion on the Jazz scene through various collaborations with the likes of Chet Baker, Steve Potts and Jimmy Gourley, to his impressive interpretations of classical repertoire, as found on his previous release for DG.

Galliano's new recording follows his acclaimed Bach project, which sold more than 40,000 units. This new album is a tribute to the late composer, Nino Rota, and ties in with Rota s 100th birthday on 3 December.

Rota was the Chaplin of composers. His music combines the sweet and joyous with the pensive and poignant in measures moving and unique. Four jazz musicians join Richard Galliano: Twice Grammy® nominated trumpeter, Dave Douglas; world-class sax and clarinet master improviser, John Surman; terrific bassist, Boris Kozlov; versatile percussionist, Clarence Penn

Le Monde tells us that Richard Galliano is restoring vitality to the accordion. He s not following the revival of the instrument: He s preceding it. Modern, without losing his soul."

Galliano s new album features, as a common thread, the original soundtrack theme of Fellini s film, La Strada. Also included is the Parla più piano theme from The Godfather.

Review & Description

Parallel to the release of The Continents we are bringing out On Two Pianos, restoring to the catalogue Chick Corea s only other recording on the Yellow Label a great live concert given by the jazz giant with virtuoso pianist Nicolaus Economou at the Munich Summer Piano Festival in 1982. Like a conversation between two insightful, intelligent men, who never quarrel because they appreciate and like each other (Süddeutsche Zeitung). Corea, the chameleon of jazz , is, of course, renowned for his collaborations with musicians of all kinds (in the same year as this recording, 1983, he brought out two more albums, where he was partnered by Friedrich Gulda and Gary Burton, respectively). Nicolaus Economou, a precociously talented pianist from Cyprus, received a classical training in the rigours of the Moscow Conservatoire in the late 1960s, before establishing himself in Munich. There, in addition to his concertizing, he was active as composer, arranger, conductor and organizer of musical festivals, including the Munich Summer Piano Festival, from which these recordings are taken. Each artist improvises in his own style; their interaction creates a glorious musical fusion. In addition to an extended improvised Suite of character pieces, there are compositions by Corea (Homecoming and Duet) and selections from Bartók s two-piano pieces in his Mikrokosmos. It was a great concert. Yet, it was something more: it was enlightening. (Süddeutsche Zeitung) Almost thirty years on, Chick Corea celebrates his 70th birthday in 2011. Nicolaus Economou died tragically young, in a car crash in Cyprus in 1993. With the release of Corea s new double-album, The Continents, on Deutsche Grammophon, we are proud to bring back On Two Pianos to the catalogue. This is its first international release on the label.

Review & Description

With her third solo album, soprano Danielle de Niese embodies Beauty of the Baroque with an album of favorite arias from the English, German, and Italian traditions, accompanied by the leading European Baroque orchestra The English Concert under Harry Bicket. Favorite arias including Handel's "Ombra mai fu" and highlights from Bach Cantatas are contrasted with solo songs by Purcell and Dowland, much loved Italian arias and sacred works. Since her earlier successes in the operas of Mozart, Danielle de Niese has become most closely associated with the music of the Baroque. The New York Times commented: "A voice seductive enough to woo gods as well as mortals." Decca's star countertenor Andreas Scholl joins Danielle de Niese for duets including Monteverdi's ravishing duet "Pur ti miro."
